I wrote this love poem in 2002, when I was about 13 years old in middle school.

—-

In this box, my love,

you will not find a ring,

but instead, a brave little bee.

he was all I could bring.

He’ll be dead by morning,

having given his life,

defending his flowers against me

where they grew beside the sea.

They grew wild along the shores,

in hopes of an afternoon bouquet for you,

but I grieved this little bee’s sting,

more from him than you.

I knew the full sacrifice he paid,

for just my small pain,

but I allowed him his victory,

leaving his flowers as a memory, flushed in the rain.

I brought you no flowers,

nor a beautiful ring,

but something this world lacked,

that this bee sought to bring.

I brought you instead,

this brave little bee.
Who proves there is love,

For even the smallest of things.
